Cacotopia (κακό, caco = bad) was the term used by Jeremy Bentham in his 19th century works ((), ())〕 kakotopia, cackotopia, or anti-utopia) is an imaginary community or society that is undesirable or frightening.〔〔 It is literally translated as "not-good place", an antonym of ''utopia''. Such societies appear in many artistic works, particularly in stories set in a future. Dystopias are often characterized by dehumanization, totalitarian governments, ruthless megacorporations, environmental disaster, or other characteristics associated with a dramatic decline in society. Dystopian societies appear in many subgenres of fiction and are often used to draw attention to potential as well as real-world trends and issues in society, which can range from environmental, cultural, political, economical, religious, psychological, ethical, scientific to technological issues, which if unaddressed could potentially lead to dystopia.
